Floor drains are most often found in basements, utility rooms, or garages. Often other drain lines in the home connect at the floor drain before emptying into the main sewer line. Problems with the floor drain mean that it needs to be cleaned promptly or you could end up with drain problems throughout the home.

1. Odors

Debris in a floor drain typically contains organic matter, from skin flakes and hair to any food residues that have made their way in. Not only can collected organic matter put out a foul odor on its own, bacteria growth can make the odor more severe. Clogs in the drain line may also trap sewer gases, which can bubble through the clog and up the drain to produce an odor much like rotten eggs. Rooter cleaning clears the clog and odors.

2. Standing Water

You may sometimes see water bubbling inside a floor drain when a lot of water is going through the line, such as when a dishwasher is running or a washing machine is draining. If there is often standing water in the drain, though, there may be a partial clog that prevents all of the liquid from promptly draining. Cleaning should solve the issue.

3. Backups

Frequent floor drain backups should never be ignored. Backups typically occur when a clog is forming in the main sewer line, which could be due to tree roots growing into the line or a debris clog. Both can be cleared by rooter drain cleaning. Backups may also occur when another drain line is blocked and the overflowing water backs up to the floor drain outlet.

4. Gurgling Noises

Other than rushing water, a floor drain shouldn't make a lot of noise. If you constantly hear gurgling in a floor drain, especially when no other water is running through any other drains in the home, there may be a partial clog. The gurgling sound is from collected water in the drain line slowly making its way through the clog. Prompt drain cleaning solves the problem before a backup occurs.

5. Drain Flies

Believe it or not, dirty floor drains can attract pests. Drain flies live and breed inside drains where there is standing water and organic materials to feed upon, which is exactly the ecosystem one would find in a dirty floor drain. Clean the drain and you will be free of the small drain flies.
