Keeping a plumbing system working as well as possible is important, and quick leak repair is essential to the job. Determining if there even is a leak, though, isn't always easy. Even if you've identified that the system is leaking, that's not the same as locating it. Here are four ways to search for issues so you can get on top of things right away.
Water Stains
Especially if there is a leak behind a wall, staining is likely to be the first evidence of the problem. Foremost, you need to determine if it's a plumbing leak repair issue or something else. Look at where the leak appears to start. If it starts at the ceiling of a home's first floor, there's a good chance a plumbing line is the source. However, a roof leak unrelated to the plumbing is likely to start on the walls of the second floor. There shouldn't be any plumbing that far up so you can usually rule it out in that scenario.
Staining is still a valuable clue in multistory buildings. The odds are fairly high in most buildings that the leak is somewhere about the stain.
Low Pressure
The water pressure level will vary. However, it should recover within hours. If there are prolonged spells of low pressure, it could be due to a leak. You may want to talk with your neighbors to determine if there's a larger problem throughout the area. However, asking a plumber to check things out is still wise out of an abundance of caution.
Mold
Leaks provide water, and water will foster mold growth. In a house with excellent climate control, the mold could be localized, though, because the system is quickly dehumidifying the air. For example, you might only find the mold in a small corner of the basement while looking with a flashlight. It is still a sign of a potential leak so have a plumber inspect it. Even if the problem isn't a plumbing issue, the water is coming from something so you'll need to address the situation.
Damaged Pipes or Fixtures
Water also leaks out of compromised plumbing fixtures and pipes. If you see corrosion along the pipes, for example, there could be a leak. It may be a very slow-motion leak, but the system is still likely losing water. Fortunately, a repair company can usually remove the affected components and get things quickly back to normal.
