If your property has an automatic irrigation system, the valves that control the flow of water are controlled by an electronic valve actuator. When the signal is received to turn on the water, the actuator relays the message to the valves to have them open.
However, if you have noticed that the distal irrigation pipes are not receiving water, there is a problem with the valve system. If you can manually turn the valves without any issues, the problem is most likely with the valve actuator, which can be verified if you also notice the signs discussed below.
1. You Notice the Water Pressure Throughout the Irrigation System Is Inconsistent
One sign that the valve actuator for your property's automatic irrigation system is going bad is when the water pressure throughout the system is inconsistent. The lines closest to the valves may have strong pressure but those farthest away may have little to no pressure.
If the actuator is going bad because of a failing motor, it may not have the power to fully open the valves to regulate the flow of water. Since there is still water going through the valves, the lines nearest to them will still have pressure but there will not be enough to supply the lines furthest from the valves. When the electronic motor is failing, the actuator will need to be replaced.
2. You Find Puddles or Flooded Areas Behind the Actuator's Location
Another sign that the valve actuator is malfunctioning is when you find puddles or flooded areas behind its location. Even if the actuator is unable to sign the proper signals to the valves to fully open, it will still be trying to pull water into the system.
Because the valves are partially or fully shut, the water will start to backflow and leak out, resulting in water puddles or even flooding. This issue can also be caused by physical damage to the actuator, which will require that it be replaced.
When you notice the water pressure throughout the system is not consistent, find flooded areas behind its location, and are able to turn the valve manually, the actuator is most likely malfunctioning. The actuator's motor may be burning up, or the part may have sustained damage. Either way, you will need to have it replaced. Contact a plumber in your area to have them inspect the valve actuator for your irrigation system to verify it is causing the issues so they can replace it with a matching model.
